Raw vs JPEG

Raw File

  • uncompressed and unprocessed shots that come out looking flat and dark
  • preserves information/data from the camera
  • raw gives you more control (sharpness & contrast)
  • it needs to be viewed using your camera's software (Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom...etc)
  • not suitable for printing without post processing
    • It has 4096 levels of brightness
    • exception - weddings
JPEG
  • most common or known as the "user friendly"
  • file size is much smaller than raw
  • standard format
  • compressed and processed by the camera
